What is GRE?
The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardized test that is required for admission to many graduate institutions in the United States and Canada, as well as few in other countries. Educational Testing Service owns and administers the GRE.
The GRE, according to ETS, is designed to assess verbal reasoning, mathematical reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking abilities gained through time. The GRE’s curriculum is divided into sections that cover algebra, geometry, arithmetic, and language. The GRE General Test is a computer-based exam that is conducted in Prometric-owned or authorized testing sites and institutions.
Pattern of GRE
The Graduate Record Examination is an aptitude test, not a qualifying exam; there isn’t a defined syllabus created by the test writers. The question pattern is designed to assess the following skill sets: Verbal, Mathematical, and Analytical Writing. The test lasts about 3 hours and 40 minutes on average
Apart from these, there is an Unscored and Research component that ETS does not consider when calculating the GRE exam score. This portion is flexible in that it can be quantitative or verbal in character.
GRE sample test papers might help you have a better understanding of the exam format and how to approach different parts.
GRE Syllabus
Analytical Writing:
This section assesses your ability to comprehend and communicate complicated issues and arguments.
The first assignment is to “Analyze an Issue,” in which you will be asked to express your thoughts on a topic of popular interest. The candidate has to provide solid evidence to back up the argument.
The second assignment is to”Analyze an Argument”. You’ll have to consider both sides of an argument in this case. Then choose a side and support it with evidence.
Verbal Section:
You must grasp the textual information and respond to the questions.
You’ll be asked ten Reading Comprehension questions to see how well you can read and comprehend a passage.
There will be 6 Text Completion and 4 Sentence Equivalent questions. These questions assess your vocabulary as well as your ability to comprehend a sentence’s context.
Quantitative Reasoning
This portion analyzes your problem-solving abilities as well as your understanding of basic mathematical topics such as algebra, geometry, and data analysis.
7-8 Quantitative Comparison problems in this phase, which will test your problem-solving speed.
Problem-solving questions are the second type of question you’ll come across. You must first grasp the situation and obtain the necessary information.
How important is your GRE score?
Depending on the institution and degree programme, the relevance of your GRE score varies. Your exam result may be a significant determinant for admission to some programmes, while it may just be a formality for others. However, most colleges and universities have their own strategy for factoring GRE test scores into their admissions process.
GRE scores on average are as follows:
Verbal and Quantitative sections – 150-155 (Range 130-170)
Analytical section – 3.5 (Range 0-6)
Who should consider taking the GRE test?
The GRE General Test is taken by applicants from all around the world who want to pursue a master’s, specialized master’s in business, MBA, JD, or Ph.D. degree.
Admissions or fellowship panels use your GRE scores to supplement your undergraduate records, reference letters, and other requirements for graduate-level study. They provide a uniform metric for Colleges to compare.
